Ladies and gentlemen...the hardest working man in Art Business!!!!! Crown Heights own!!!! Mr...Cedric..Umoja!!!!
Steel sharpens steel, so I always enjoy hanging out and exchanging ideas with Ced. Hes one of the folks that inspires me to push what I'm doing to the limit. He asked me to contribute to his "Beyonder" project and after the learning experience I had with "Deliverers of The Soul Sonic Force" I was happy to contribute. I will actually be traveling there with Cedric and DJ Peoples of The Cut Fresh Crew on March 19 to provide some live sounds. Here is a teaser video put together by Mighty Gesture...the music was put together by yours truly
Here are some more treats in store at the showing that were leaked on Cedric Umoja's facebook page.
Visual artist, Cedric Umoja, will be featured in Beyonder, a solo exhibit showing at the FAB Gallery in NE Orangeburg, SC. The dates for the exhibit are March 14, 2013 to April 4, 2013 and will consist of new paintings and mixed-media works by Cedric Umoja, whose dynamic artwork has become known for its vibrant figurative abstractions and metaphysical symbolism.

Show Recap: The Boom Room Presents
I’m no stranger to shows at New Brookland Tavern and I always have a good time just from the people and atmosphere there. I had an exceptional time at “The Boom Room Presents” this past Thursday. The Boom Room is my studio of choice in Columbia, but even I wasn’t aware of all the talent that records there on the regular. Even though the artist on the ticket were new to me I figured there was something special about all the acts because of the way it was being presented to the fans. The Boom Room/Jam Room studio after all the years serving the music community in Columbia isn’t about to put a stamp on something they don’t believe in and neither is FatRat Da Czar.
MTG (Money Train Gang) from Newberry, SC started the show off. I’m from a small town called Hopkins, so these fellas being from the country, plus having the entire crew on stage in support of the ones rapping...plus the matching MTG t-shirts made me feel right at home. I noticed a small bit of stage fright, but once they noticed the crowd responding well to their music the fell right into place. I absolutely love the song “Remember Me” ! That's a country rap tune at its finest and I will be jamming to that song this Spring/Summer
The world needs more R&B/Soul Music so I was excited to see that there was a singer coming to the stage next. Her voice is as purdy as she is..lol. The assistance of a background vocalist and electric guitar along added a nice intimate feel to her set. She left on a high note and left us wanting more when she closed out her show with a high energy club banger called “Crinkle Cut” with accompanying background dancers.
I'm familiar with each member of Grand Royal separately, and after the release of their debut single "Dynasty" I was interested in seeing how they were going to gel together on stage. They started off with a west coast style song called "64 Impala" by the 4 male members of the group (Ali-Rah, Vo Norris, Preemo Heem, and Heazy Boi). As soon as their introductory song ended they wasted no time in presenting the group's first lady, LaLisa as she walked on stage to perform her song "If The Money Gone". The bass in the song caught everyone's attention and the ladies in attendance were definitely feeling lines like "No you can't have my number, if you're a broke guy, Dione Warwick...walk on by". The energy was right and Ali Rah led a crowd call and response as a transitions into their song "Dynasty". The chemistry they share made you forget that it was their first time on stage together.
J11 (Pronounced J Ones) took to the stage next. He was introduced to the crowd as having some of the best lyrics in the city by the host, FatRat Da Czar. This was for very good reason. J11 is extremely crafty with his word play and slick with his delivery. The tone if his voice and his stage presence give it an effortless feel. "Give It To Ya" has a super smooth vibe with a synth that puts me in the mind of "Summer Madness" by Kool & the Gang and the vocalist on the chorus completed the R&B/HipHop zone that the song leads you into. He was assisted by Logic on what was the stand out song (in my opinion) "Bomb Shit". The baseline stopped me dead in my tracks as I was about to step outside to take a phone call. The song was very braggadocios and showcased both emcee's flow.
After so many good performances I wasn't sure if it was possible to bring the appropriate energy to close out a good night at New Brookland Tavern. Needless to say I underestimated the headliner Fresh Demarco. I'm glad I stuck around otherwise I would have missed the most energetic show of the night. His style is...well..stylish..lol. Often the word "catchy" would be used to describe a hook, but in this case Fresh Demarco's lyrics including his hooks are catchy. His single "Dey Can't" is a testament to that. The standout song of his performance was "Niggas Always Talk" which hasn't even been added to his Sound Cloud account yet. I'm patiently waiting for it to drop so I can add it to my play list.
The night was a success! I look forward to the next Boom Room Presents and I especially look forward to hearing more music from all of the acts that hit the stage. Who knows, maybe the next time you hear from them on this site it will be over some of my production.

FatRat Da Czar Presents: Grand Royal
The
2nd half of 2012 saw 2 releases from Da Czar; The Empire and DJ Cannon
Banyon assisted “Inglourious Basterd” and the conclusion on his popular
mixtape series “Da Cold War 3: The Final Chapta. Naturally there were
songs with stand out features.
VoNorris - "Bounce Rock" (CW3),
Heazy Boi and Preemo Heem - "A Czar is Born" (CW3),
Ali Rah - "South Cack Whuddup!" (Inglourious Basterd),
LaLisa - "Need Someone" (Inglourious Basterd).
VoNorris - "Bounce Rock" (CW3),
Heazy Boi and Preemo Heem - "A Czar is Born" (CW3),
Ali Rah - "South Cack Whuddup!" (Inglourious Basterd),
LaLisa - "Need Someone" (Inglourious Basterd).
"These artists were hand-picked by myself. I was working with all 5 artists individually and they have all been featured on my latest projects. Last year I had an idea to throw them on a record together and it worked out so well we started recording for a full length" - FatRat Da Czar
When it comes to a rap group/crew assembling it has to be more than people getting together and saying “we should rap together”. There needs to be chemistry, a mutual respect...the experience has to be special. I've had the privilege of sitting in on a recording session with Grand Royal and the "special" is evident just from the 5 interacting with one another. It doesn't hurt that they are the combination of the 2 places that FatRat Da Czar calls home (South Carolina and Virginia)
Members
- Ali Rah (Hopkins, SC) VoNorris (Columbia, SC) Heazy Boi (Newport
News, Va) LaLisa (Columbia, SC) Preemo Heem (Newport News Va)
The groups debut single "Dynasty" is skillfully produced by Miles Franco. I'm a sucker for soul samples and especially anything that samples one of my favorite artist ,Donny Hathaway. The beat-makers code will keep me from naming the sample in question, but the loop captures a certain spirit that allows each member of Grand Royal to fall right into "the pocket" or "zone" if you will. The tone is further set when Da Czar offers his stamp, his blessing on the song with the statement
"I knew that if I wanted my legacy to live forever that next generation of Street Side would have to come forth, and I think that time is now"
The song has elements of both a ballad
and an anthem and its right here for you to listen to!!
